Bangkok's floating markets are less about shopping than about seeing canal life — and they range from busy, tourist-oriented spectacles a couple of hours out of town to small weekend food markets within the city. The famous one, Damnoen Saduak, is the least authentic; the most enjoyable ones depend on which day of the week you're free.

This page compares the main options. For the classic full-day trip combining a floating market with the Maeklong Railway Market, see day trips from Bangkok.

Days and times come from recent listings in 2026, which disagree on the exact hours; check each market's current details before you go.

Damnoen Saduak

The market that appears in every brochure: wooden boats loaded with fruit and noodles on a narrow canal. Today it's aimed largely at tourists, with souvenir stalls along the banks and paid boat rides. Prices for boat rides are not fixed — agree the price and duration before you get in.

  • Go early. It's busiest from mid-morning when tour groups arrive.
  • Best done as part of a tour that also includes the Maeklong Railway Market, as the two are about 30 minutes apart by road.
  • Honest verdict: go for the photographs, not for authenticity.

Amphawa

A canal-side market popular with Thai visitors from Bangkok, with food stalls along the banks and boats grilling seafood on the water. It feels more like a Thai weekend outing than a tourist sight.

  • Open Friday to Sunday, from around midday into the evening.
  • Stay for dusk if you can; evening boat trips to see fireflies along the river run from here.
  • Combine with the Maeklong Railway Market, about 10–15 minutes away.

Taling Chan

The easiest floating market to reach from central Bangkok: a weekend market beside the district office in Thonburi, where cooks on moored boats grill seafood and you eat on floating platforms. Small, local and short — an hour is enough.

Khlong Lat Mayom

Larger than Taling Chan and a little further out, with a long market of food stalls, sweets and fruit along a canal, and boat rides through the surrounding orchards and canals. It's popular with Thai families at weekends.

Getting there

  • Damnoen Saduak and Amphawa: most visitors take a tour or a private driver. Public minivans run from Bangkok, but connecting the markets and the railway market by public transport takes careful timing.
  • Taling Chan and Khlong Lat Mayom: a taxi or Grab from central Bangkok is simplest; they aren't near the BTS or MRT.

Which one?

  • Short on time, staying in Bangkok: Taling Chan or Khlong Lat Mayom at the weekend.
  • Want the classic image: Damnoen Saduak with Maeklong, on a tour, early.
  • Free on a Friday to Sunday and want something livelier: Amphawa, in the afternoon and evening.
  • Only free on a weekday: Damnoen Saduak is the only one of the four open daily.

Questions people ask

Which floating market near Bangkok is open on weekdays?

Damnoen Saduak is the only one of the main four open every day, in the mornings. Amphawa opens Friday to Sunday; Taling Chan and Khlong Lat Mayom are weekend markets.

Is Damnoen Saduak worth it?

For the classic photographs, yes, if you go early and combine it with the Maeklong Railway Market. For a sense of everyday canal life, Amphawa or Khlong Lat Mayom is better.
