In this guide ↓
Bangkok has two international airports, around 30 kilometres apart. Check your booking before you plan your transfer:
- Suvarnabhumi (BKK) — the main international airport, east of the city.
- Don Mueang (DMK) — the older airport in the north, used mainly by budget airlines.
The quick answer
| Your situation | Best option |
|---|---|
| Suvarnabhumi, daytime, light luggage, staying near the BTS | Airport Rail Link |
| Suvarnabhumi, heavy luggage, family or late at night | Metered taxi from the official queue, or Grab |
| Don Mueang, staying near the MRT | SRT Red Line, then MRT |
| Don Mueang, staying near the BTS | A1 bus to Mo Chit |
| Arriving very late, first time, or with children | Pre-booked transfer |
From Suvarnabhumi (BKK)
Airport Rail Link
The fastest option at rush hour, because it avoids the roads entirely.
- Where: the station is in the airport basement; follow signs for "Airport Rail Link" or "Train to City".
- Route: eight stations to Phaya Thai, the terminus, where you change for the BTS Skytrain. Makkasan connects to the MRT Blue Line at Phetchaburi.
- Time: about 26–30 minutes to Phaya Thai.
- Fare: distance-based, up to 45 THB to Phaya Thai when we checked (October 2026).
- Hours: roughly 5:30am to midnight.
- Downsides: crowded at commuter times, and the onward change to the BTS involves stairs and a separate ticket.
Metered taxi
- Use the official public taxi queue on the arrivals level; a machine gives you a ticket with your taxi's number.
- You pay the meter, plus a fixed 50 THB airport surcharge and any expressway tolls (the driver will ask you for these at the toll booths or add them at the end).
- Journey time to central Bangkok is typically 30–60 minutes, much longer at rush hour.
- If a driver won't use the meter, take another taxi.
Grab and ride-hailing
Book in the app and go to the signposted pick-up point. You see the fare upfront, which avoids meter discussions. Prices rise at busy times.
Pre-booked transfer
The least stressful option after a long flight, especially at night, with children or with a lot of luggage. Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a sign.
From Don Mueang (DMK)
SRT Red Line
The Red Line commuter railway runs from Don Mueang station, reached by a walkway from the terminal, to Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal, where you can change to the MRT Blue Line at Bang Sue. Fares on the Red Line have been changed several times under government fare policies; check the current fare at the station.
A1 airport bus
The A1 bus runs from outside arrivals to BTS Mo Chit and the nearby MRT, about 30 THB when we checked, roughly every 15–20 minutes from early morning until midnight. Other airport bus routes run towards Victory Monument, Lumphini and Khao San Road; check the signs at the bus stop.
Taxi and Grab
As at Suvarnabhumi: official taxi queue on the arrivals level, meter plus 50 THB surcharge and tolls, or Grab from the signposted pick-up point.
Tips for your first hour
- Get data first. Buy a SIM at the airport or set up an eSIM before you fly, so you can use maps and Grab. See SIM cards and eSIMs.
- Withdraw a little cash at the airport for the taxi or bus; withdraw more in the city.
- Have your hotel's address in Thai for taxi drivers.
- Ignore anyone in the arrivals hall offering a taxi. Use the official queue, Grab or your pre-booked driver.
Where you're going matters
The Airport Rail Link is excellent if your hotel is near Phaya Thai, Ratchathewi or Siam, or along the MRT from Makkasan. For the Riverside or the Old Town, a taxi is usually simpler. See where to stay in Bangkok, and our BTS and MRT guide for the onward journey.
