Bangkok's New Year's Eve (the countdown into 1 January) is a set of large public celebrations at the city's malls and along the river, with fireworks and, in recent years, drone shows. The programme for 31 December 2026 has not been announced as of October 2026. This page sets out what happened last year, so you know where the crowds will probably be, and points to the places to check for the official plans.
What happened last year (2025–26)
- CentralWorld / Ratchaprasong. The organiser, Central Pattana, reported more than 350,000 people at Ratchaprasong for the midnight show (press release). The Thai government reported that six roads near CentralWorld were closed for the event (Royal Thai Government).
- ICONSIAM. Travel guides report an "Amazing Thailand Countdown" at River Park from 27 to 31 December 2025, with a fireworks, drone and pyrotechnics show on the main night. Check ICONSIAM's own announcements.
- Fireworks permits. A guide reports that the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration approved 20 locations for fireworks that night (The Thaiger).
- Asiatique. Guides describe it as a calmer riverside option, with its ferris wheel and riverfront restaurants.
What we don't know yet
We have not found an official 2026–27 line-up, schedule, road-closure plan or extended public-transport hours. Do not rely on third-party listings for these. Check:
- the announcements from CentralWorld / Central Pattana, ICONSIAM and Asiatique themselves;
- the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and the Tourism Authority of Thailand for official plans;
- BTS, MRT and the Chao Phraya Express Boat operators for service hours on the night.
Planning, in our view
These are judgements, not facts, because the programme isn't published:
- Ratchaprasong will be the most crowded. If you go, stay out of the way of the road closures, and plan how you will leave. Given last year's road closures, expect taxis to be hard to find near it (our inference).
- The river is the alternative. For a calmer evening, a riverside table or a dinner cruise on the Chao Phraya (see Bangkok dinner cruises) avoids the Ratchaprasong crowd. Book early.
- Plan the trip home before you go out. Know where the nearest rail station is, and whether it will be running.
- Check the weather. After the rains, the cool, dry season is the best time of year; see the best time to visit Bangkok.
- Rooftop bars set their own prices and rules for the night. If you want one, see Bangkok's rooftop bars and check the venue's own announcement.
Getting to each area
- Ratchaprasong / CentralWorld: BTS Chit Lom or Siam, linked by skywalks. The Erawan Shrine is on the same intersection, and the Siam guide covers the malls around it.
- ICONSIAM: on the Thonburi riverbank, reached by the BTS Gold Line or a free shuttle boat from Sathorn pier; see the ICONSIAM guide.
- Asiatique: by free shuttle boat from Sathorn pier (next to BTS Saphan Taksin); see the Asiatique guide.
Rail and boat hours on the night are not confirmed. Check each operator.
Alternatives to the countdown
Some visitors prefer a quieter start to the year: dinner in Yaowarat, a walk along the river, or a night at the markets. Chinese New Year follows on 6 February 2027; see Chinese New Year in Bangkok.
- Best Time to Visit BangkokBangkok is hot every month of the year. The real choice is between dry and busy, scorching, or wet and cheaper. Here's how each month actually feels.
- The Chao Phraya RiverThe river is the fastest way between the Old Town, Chinatown and the riverside hotels, and the most pleasant one. Once you understand the boats, it changes how you plan the city.
